“Metamorphoses – Medusa” is a striking contemporary reinterpretation of one of the most iconic myths of classical antiquity. In this work, the figure of Medusa emerges in the foreground as a sculptural presence—powerful, suspended, almost resurrected—while behind her the original Latin verses from Ovid’s Metamorphoses flow across the canvas like a chant from another time. The handwritten text, dripping and imperfect, evokes both the fragility of memory and the violence of transformation.

The statue of Medusa, rendered with a delicate yet solid sense of volume, bridges the boundary between painting and sculpture. Her posture—neither defensive nor aggressive—invites a renewed reading of the myth: no longer the monstrous Gorgon, but a symbol of violated beauty, divine punishment, and resilience. The serpentine hair becomes an aura of movement, while her downward gaze suggests the weight of centuries of misunderstanding.

The background, a vibrant deep blue interrupted by flashes of acid yellow, amplifies the dramatic tension. The color drips and dynamic textures echo the turmoil of metamorphosis, contrasting with the serene stillness of the figure. The overlay of the Ovidian text transforms the painting into a dialogue between past and present: the classical narrative dissolves into gestures of contemporary expression, reclaiming Medusa not as an object of fear but as a complex, humanized presence.

Both mythological and profoundly modern, this artwork explores themes of identity, power, vulnerability, and the way stories shape the way we look at women throughout history. It stands as a powerful meditation on transformation—physical, emotional, and symbolic—inviting the viewer to confront their own gaze.
